Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Safety: A Summary for Clinicians



Contraindications

LAIV should not be administered to: people who have had a severe allergic reaction to the following:
  • Children aged <2 years or adults aged ≥50 years
  • People who have had a severe allergic reaction to a component of the LAIV vaccine. The package insert should be consulted for components.9
  • People who have had a severe allergic reaction to to a prior dose of any influenza vaccine.
  • Children or adolescents receiving aspirin or other salicylates (because of the association of Reye syndrome with wild-type influenza virus infection)
  • Egg-allergic persons
  • Pregnant women
  • People with known or suspected immunodeficiency diseases or immunosuppressed states (including those caused by HIV)
  • Children aged 2 through 4 years who have asthma or who have had a wheezing episode noted in the medical record within the past 12 months, or for whom parents report that a health care provider stated that they had wheezing or asthma within the last 12 months
  • Persons who have taken influenza antiviral medications within the previous 48 hours.
